Face Front, True Believers! Mister Fixit, Illegal Machine and Diabolu Frank are back to slogging through the proposed comic book movie slates of Marvel Studios versus Warner Brothers/DC. Fixit catches up with the conversation of our first episode in this series by addressing Black Panther v Cyborg (00:33) and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 v Suicide Squad (16:34) while the full trio delve into newer territory with Doctor Strange v The Flash (03:27). Then Mac and Frank climb into the Mighty Marvel Mail Bag (22:05)! Excelsior!

To clarify on commentary in the mail section, Jem debuted as part of Super Sunday, a half-hour anthology cartoon co-produced by Sunbow Productions and Marvel Productions that ran for a year beginning in October of 1985. Segments included Jem, Robotix, Inhumanoids, & Bigfoot and the Muscle Machines. Two of the segments never progressed past the show, Inhumanoids spun off into a thirteen episode series, while Jem ran 65 episodes before wrapping in 1988. ThunderCats debuted in January of 1985, SilverHawks in September of 1986, followed by the much less successful TigerSharks and the Super Sundayesque The Comic Strip, all from Rankin/Bass Productions.

  1. Nice short and sweet episode!

    I’m glad I wasn’t the only one disappointed by X-Men: Days of Future Past, although I think I was even more critical about it.

    I don’t think I’ve seen Ezra Miller in anything, but my initial response to his casting was that he looks like he’s twelve years old. That made me think he could be playing Bart Allen coming from the future, which would at least be a different take on the character’s origin, but he’s derivative so they would still have to explain Barry.

    If Warner Bros. makes the movie Flash a gay man, I hope they make him a brand new character. As Frank said in a previous episode, DC made Alan Scott gay for the New 52 and the character was so fundamentally different anyway that he was Alan Scott in name only, but now the comics prematurely killed off the chance for Alan’s descendants to pop up.

    I’ve seen Benedict Cumberbatch in a lot of movies, television, and even stage plays and I think he is a terrific actor that has a very specific skill set. I think his clinical sort-of detachment seems very appealing to what casual fans see in Doctor Strange, but not what Frank and Mac see in the character from the comics. I’m a little on the fence. Cumberbatch isn’t my first choice, but he wouldn’t ruin the film.

    However–and maybe Frank can take heart from this–Cumberbatch has been “all-but confirmed” in the role for two months now without any official word from Marvel. That was how it went with Joaquin Phoenix last summer, and the longer it went without anyone signing a contract the greater the chance of the deal breaking down. So maybe all Frank needs to do is wait and the studio will move on to another actor.

    However, however… Marvel Studios originally had a release date scheduled for early July 2016, but they announced Doctor Strange is coming out in November. Did they push the production and release schedule back because they haven’t signed an actor yet, or because they needed to accommodate their actor’s schedule?

  2. Also, if James Gunn is to be believed, Guardians of the Galaxy 2: Electric Boogaloo will be independent and not a set-up for Infinity War. I have a feeling the next time we see Thanos will be in Thor: Ragnarok. Kevin Feige said the third Thor film will be a universe-change ala The Winter Soldier. I take that to mean the destruction of Asgard as we know it–either completely wiped out or it “crashes” onto Earth like it has in the comics a couple of times.

    But Asgard is home to at least one of the Infinity Stones and the Gauntlet in Odin’s trophy room. So either Loki gives those items to Thanos, or the Mad Titan walks through the dust and debris after Surtur runs amok and collects his prizes.

  3. First off, let me start with my wholehearted agreements with Frank (it happens more than you think): YES, X-Men Days of Future Past totally lost the plot. I’m also very critical of it, and of everyone who oversold it saying it was one of the best superhero films ever. YES, the Defenders and solo heroes of the Marvel U have NO BUSINESS being in the Avengers, and the fact everyone ever is an Avenger has diluted the brand tremendously. Further, YES, I will agree that Dr. Strange should be American, though not that a Brit in the role (and he may or may not change accents) means it’ll be Harry Potter. I’m pretty sure it won’t be that.

    But while I’m in no geographical position to argue with your notion that Cumberbatch isn’t well known in the States (your various mispronunciations of the name is evidence of that, I suppose), I think you’ll eventually have to eat your words re: his casting when he becomes truly ubiquitous over the next year, in all likelihood getting an Oscar nom for The Imitation Game. It’s very hard to forget a name like “Benedict Cumberbatch” once you’ve heard it, which will help even the most dedicated IMDB denier in among the rubes. By the time Dr. Strange comes out, Cumberbatch’s star will have ascended, because it’s in the process of doing so. Sherlock is a lot more popular, I think, than you give it credit, and the Internet’s love affair with the man, at the moment because of his impressive impression skills, insane version of the bucket challenge, and inability to pronounce “penguins” as featured in that Madagascar movie WILL translate in notoriety for a superhero movie. I’d imagine the Venn diagram on superhero movies and people who live their lives on the Internet has a pretty large common area. But that’s just me. I live on the Internet too.

  5. A short and sweet episode deserves a short and sweet response.

    Cumberbatch seems like too much of a snore to be a good Strange.

    I think the Flash movie will be one of the better DC movies.

    Suicide Squad sounds more intriguing now that have heard the cast. Robbie as Harley is brilliant.

  6. Count, interesting theories all. Waiting to see how things play out. Warners is certainly proving they’re willing to outspend Marvel. Not too keen on Will Smith as Deadshot as it all but guarantees no mask, plus Smith is much more of a Rick Flagg type. No issues with the rest of the cast, though I’m indifferent to many of the roles/actors, so yeah.

    Siskoid, this needs to be said in Axel Alonso’s ear every night: “the fact everyone ever is an Avenger has diluted the brand tremendously.” A clarification: I didn’t mean to make it seem like I was opposed to a non-American actor playing Doctor Strange, only to an actor playing him as non-American. For instance, I’m fine with Bale, Caville, Garfield– all believable as yanks. I’ve heard Cumberbatch’s American accent. It’s listed in the “con” column. Mark my words: Cumberbatch is at best the next Colin Farrell/Jude Law/Clive Owen, the hotshot major motion picture star in the making that never actually catches on and becomes a reliable supporting actor/stars in nice but not lucrative productions. Except I like and would prefer any of those guys over Cumberbatch.

    Anj, next week’s episode is less than 35 minutes unedited, so take out the crap and insert a mail section… probably an hour. We have an already recorded, rather lengthy reply to an email before we even start on other commentary.

  9. Well, the good news is that my ranting against Benedict Cumberbatch in various episodes of the podcast will not be rendered quaint in 2015 by a different casting choice, and now it remains to be seen whether my concerns are vindicated or if I end up looking like an idiot in 2017.

    The episode after next will return to the run of movie slate shows, and if you’re paying attention, it should be easy to figure out which lackluster properties will be up for discussion. Perhaps we should convene for a value adding talk about this totally random MARVEL CASTING DAY, what with the confirmations of The Botch, Krysten Ritter, and Ryan Reynolds plus more on Paul Bettany and Mike Colter?

  11. I think Benedict Cumberbatch is probably more well known in the U.S. than you guys suspect. Especially after Star Trek, everyone seems to know him. He’s America’s favorite British guy right now. I hope he’ll play Doctor Strange with an American accent. If you want to love Benedict, listen to him in the radio sitcom, “Cabin Pressure”. Wonderfully hilarious sitcom and gives you an idea of Benedict’s range (plays a completely different character than you are used to).

    I don’t think the Flash TV show (which is great, by the way) is saving the Flash rogues for the movie. I think they are just slowly dishing them out to stretch 7 seasons. That’s why they are burning through Firestorm villains, so they don’t use all the Flash rogues in season one. They gotta have some new “big bads” in season 2, 3, etc.. Also, if Flash continues to be as successful as it is right now (it’s doing really well in the ratings), I think DC will rethink their Flash movie strategy.
