In light of DC Comics’ official discontinuation of the “New 52” brand just as they finally announce the now-not-New 52 Martian Manhunter series we’ve been waiting for since 2011, Frank looks at the history of the Alien Atlas within the context of the current publishing continuity.

  1. I wanted to like New52 Stormfront because I like Paul Cornell and J’Onn was in it, but found the Wildstorm stuff mostly uninteresting and not a good fit for the DCU in any form. Jim Lee just wanted royalties and/or keeping his properties in the public eye for licensing purposes presumably. I don’t know. Feels like corporate greed for a publisher to force the line into a self-serving shape, and that’s no way to run things from a creative standpoint. Not surprisingly, none of the New52 Wildstorm implants have been successes.

    It looks like ditching the New52 label is part of an initiative to do away with the grim house style that’s been a part of most books in the line over the past 3 years. The Batman family of books is certainly showing signs of that already, DC, as usual, following Marvel’s lead a few years late.
