Face Front, True Believer! Dr. Anj of Supergirl Comic Box Commentary fame finally joins Diabolu Frank & Mister Fixit for an episode focusing on the Were-Woman! Connecting the dots of Tigra’s various late Bronze Age solo and guest appearances, we cover Marvel Chillers #4 and Marvel Two-In-One #19 (both 1976,) Fantastic Four #177-184 (moving into 1977,) Marvel Team-Up #67 and Marvel Premiere #42 (1978,) before concluding with Marvel Team-Up #125 (January, 1983!) Besides multiple pairings of Tigra with Ben Grimm and Peter Parker, she also faces Kraven the Hunter twice; joins Invisible Girl, Thundra, Human Torch and Mr. Fantastic for an extended adventure; loses her mentor Dr. Tumolo; and faces the return of Zabo from her comics debut as Greer Grant Nelson: The Cat! Talent on these stories includes Chris Claremont, John Byrne, George Pérez, Roy Thomas, Gerry Conway, Ron Wilson, Joe Sinnott, J.M. DeMatteis, Kerry Gammill, Len Wein, Sal Buscema, Bill Mantlo, Frank Robbins, Jim Shooter, Archie Goodwin, John Warner, Ed Hannigan, Mike Vosburg & Ernie Chan! That kind of spread requires an episode tumblr gallery! We even managed to work Superman & Big Barda in (and out again!) That’s a lot of comics to bring in at under 90 minutes! Excelsior!

  1. I love how Tigra has become a running character for this podcast. The insight into her origins and ongoing development makes fascinating long-form listening. I don’t have anything insightful or pithy to add, just keep up the great work and let’s have more Tigra episodes! And it goes without saying… She’s Hot!

  2. Love Tigra. I discovered her in the original West Coast Avengers mini and soon found that Marvel Team-Up issue in a flea market. I do not prefer the furry, tailed version she became later. The design is much weaker.

Her role in Avengers Academy was probably one of the key factors motivating my picking up that book (at least before I generated affection for the kids).

  3. Aggh, my heart sank when I heard Anj say he recalled Tigra once ran around in a Hellcat costume! You didn’t take a moment to straighten him out! So disappointing!
IMO J. Marc DeMatteis was the first writer to “get” Greer Nelson’s character since Linda Fite. I really like MTU #125, except for the reveal that Zabo was supposed to be Donalbain’s brother. That still bothers me. It seems arbitrary, like the disposition of Dr. Tumolo in Marvel Premiere #42.
BTW, I believe it’s canon that the reveal of the Cat Peoples’ existence to the general public in #42 resulted in them evacuating Earth. With the exception of the Balkatar and Tigra, none of them have been back since.
