Face Front, True Believer! Our attempts to record an episode on the Jessica Jones TV show from Netflix have been plagued by delays and technical difficulties, including only recording five minutes of an hour-long first try that mostly centered on co-hosts Illegal Machine and Diabolu Frank! We finally got a full length show “on tape,” with a fired-up Mister Fixit besides, so sorry that the audio quality is like unto tin cans connected by string! First we give an overview of the history of Marvel Comics’ adults-only MAX imprint, with special mentions for Punisher, Nick Fury, and… Rawhide Kid? Then we look at Alias, the three year long solo series where the super-heroine Jewel, A.K.A. Jessica Jones, made her debut (and which provided the source material for the television adaptation!) Finally, we get into the TV show itself, which trades Carol Danvers for Trish Walker as the star’s bestie and emphasizes Luke Cage as her love interest (in his own live action debut!)

  1. A good spread of opinions there. Me, I’m not a big fan of rape narratives in superhero comics. It’s become this ugly cliché to give superheroines something like it in their backgrounds. However, if you’re going to do it, do it right, by asking questions about the nature of consent, and exploring the real trauma that comes with lack of control. Jessica Jones Season 1 does this and is entirely more successful than most comics that have attempted this, and than Daredevil, the first entry in Netflix’s Marvel shows. Face it, the Purple Man – or the less silly Killgrave, if you prefer – is a terrifying villain who can control everyone around him, and it’s rendered excessively well (did Jessica Jones, in fact, puncture Preacher’s balloon before it got off the ground?). But more than a seasonal villain, he’s made into a supervillainous stalker and date rapist, highlighting terribly common-place behavior in a heightened way that actually builds on a theme. And as much as David Tennant’s villain is a key ingredient in the season, he doesn’t have to stick around forever like the Kingpin does in Daredevil, so the show doesn’t feel like it’s movie as slowly, and has more satisfying resolutions, despite the fact that I do agree with you that these shows are essentially 6-episode arcs with at least 4 episodes of padding. It also helps that Jessica Jones has a more expansive and interesting cast, with Luke Cage playing an important role and easily selling us, I think, on his own upcoming series. Even so, I’ve been unable to keep up with the releases, or rather, unwilling, and after a single episode of DD Season 2, I haven’t even tried to cue up a Netflix Marvel show.
