“Know, oh prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an Age undreamed of, when shining kingdoms lay spread across the world like blue mantles beneath the stars. Hither came Conan, the Cimmerian, black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet.”
– The Nemedian Chronicles.

Face Front, True Believers! Mr. Fixit talks about one of his favorite films on upon its 40th anniversary, John Milius’ Conan the Barbarian starring Arnold Strong Schwarzenegger! And because he’s talking to Diabolu Frank, we also have to do a brief biography of Robert E. Howard, publication history of Conan from the pulps to Marvel Comics, 1984’s Conan the Destroyer, 1985’s Red Sonja starring Brigitte Nielsen, 2011’s Conan the Barbarian starring Jason Momoa, and even 2009’s Solomon Kane starring James Purefoy, with related comic books! But definetely not Kull the Conqueror, that humongous flop starring Worst Hercules, because, again, Frank! Stick around for the Mighty Marvel Marvel Mail Bag, touching on D23 announcements! Excelsior!

  1. I’m getting caught up on old episodes and don’t know how I missed this one right when it came out – but it was a great listen! I have never outgrown my Conan phase, I guess the longer I work in the “civilized” corporate world, the more I wish I could embrace my more barbaric days of being an athlete in a bunch of super violent sports. Robert E Howard’s quote “Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.” has never rang truer than it does today.

Anyways – I also concur on the Solomon Kane movie, I really enjoy that one, I picked that up on either DVD or blu-ray from a local video rental place that has since gone belly-up. I want to say I picked that up in 2013 or 2014 and it’s been something I typically rewatch and enjoy every October.

On the Conan front, if you haven’t read it, I highly recommend the Kurt Busiek and Cary Nord Conan run from Dark Horse – I think it’s my favorite stuff Busiek has ever written. Cary Nord’s art is stunning, the published artwork is published from his pencils with Dave Stewart doing watercolors over it. Awesome stuff, and my personal favorite adaption of the REH classic stories.

I’m interested to see what Titan will do with the Conan license, to date I believe they’ve only solicited omnibus collections for the bronze age Marvel stuff – but looks like they are going to do Conan as their FCBD “Gold” book entry.
