Face Front, True Believer! West Side was represented in episode 3, so now it’s East Side’s turn! The slightly less world renowned but still well regarded and now more heavily attended New York Comic Con held its 2014 gathering earlier this month, and our vociferous speakers Diabolu Frank, Mister Fixit & Illegal Machine have cranked out over an hour of commentary on news surrounding the event with our first ever special guest, Pekita Trotamundos! How’s that for service, effendi?

  • 01:39 Captain America: Civil War. The Warner Brothers DC Comics Cinematic Universe. The Fantastic Four grim n’ gritty reboot. Knocking out the big stuff right at jump.
  • 13:40 Talking early comics-related experiences in Mexico with Pekita!
  • 22:25 Let’s talk about the latest batch of actors who ultimately won’t be cast as Doctor Strange, especially Keanu Reeves. Also, what about his villains? And screw it, Frank offers his top 5 Clea casting picks, for all anyone cares.
  • 29:12 Wonder Woman ’77. Bitching about Black Widow. Guardians of the Galaxy, Nicole Perlman, and the Gamora ongoing series. More girl power at Marvel. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Daredevil on Netflix. DC Domino Dancing.

  1. I’m way behind on my podcast listening–I haven’t even listened to the Tigra episode from last week yet, but I got a chance to listen to the NYCC episode this morning. I’ll try and post more comprehensive thoughts later on, but for now just a few quick hits.

    1. Nice to hear Pekita’s Marvel movie rankings. Always interesting to get a fresh perspective with different tastes.

    2. Don’t give Pekita a hard time for confusing the Fantastic Four with The Incredibles. The Incredibles is by far the best Fantastic Four movie that has come out so far. (The second best FF movie is the William Hurt “Lost In Space” movie from 15 years ago.)

    3. I’m a Fantastic Four fan and I am absolutely DREADING the new movie from Fox. Everything I’ve heard about the tone and direction of the movie sounds wrong, and unlike the DC movies that I’m ambivalent towards, I am actively hoping the new Fantastic Four bombs.

    More comments to come later…

  2. “Fresh Perspective” = “This was the only part I could understand what Pekita was saying through that thick accent.”

I’ll concede that the Incredibles were the Fantastic Four done right, but the Corman picture was probably more right than any of the official releases.

So wait, the Fantastic Four aren’t troubled twentysomethings who like to record one another constantly for YouTube. Don’t they have a member named “Grimm?”

  3. Even though Rosario Dawson’s character is named after an obscure Luke Cage love interest, I’m pretty sure her character will be, effectively, the Night Nurse. Jeph Loeb kinda/sorta alluded to this in the panel at NYCC. Night Nurse was named Linda Carter, so Marvel might want to change the character’s ID to avoid confusion with Lynda Carter.

  4. A win for Pekita! She did good. I like the Dark Knight Rises specifically for Anne Hathaway’s acting. I will watch it again and again for her scenes alone. (it helps that she is hot, but that is not the reason I like her parts, but I like her parts as well.) I also liked Bane, even though his voice was a hair to muffled, the character works for me. I didn’t like Talia’s death, worse part of the movie for me. I grew up through Breaking of the Bat so it resonated with me. As for Man of Steel, He Killed someone I am good with that, to many people died. A lot of people died yes, but the numbered he saved far out weighed the number that died. I have been on the Zach Snyder band wagon since his Dawn of the Dead remake. I have not gotten off yet, so I am biased.

  5. Trotamundos? That means Globetrotter right? Awesome name. Fun to see you growing your family.

When did they try to turn Wally West into a minority combo? Sounded like you were talking about Kyle Rayner there.

Given that you’ve covered a number of announcements out of ComiCon, I was wondering if you guys were going to do anything with Secret Wars now that another (and entirely unnecessary) chapter has been announced.

  6. Count, jeez, now I have to feel bad about how Rosario Dawson deserves better than Night Nurse. I wonder if she’s going to be the Nick Fury of the Netflix mini-verse? Not exactly kick ass, but diversely applicable across all shows. She could even run into Kyle McLaughlin in some back alley operating room.

CJ, I couldn’t remember how much/if I’ve rambled on about DKRises/MoSteel in previous episodes, so I cut myself out, but I’ll (re)state(?) that Anne Hathaway was about the only good thing in the former film. She could even be a contender against Michelle Pfeiffer, except I can’t seem to watch DKRises for more than 15 minutes without turning the channel in disgust at the incompetent script, so a direct viewing competition seems unlikely. I found Hardy’s Bane literally laughable. Pekita would have been a better voice actor there. I didn’t recognize Talia in that movie– just another cinematic crazy bitch-ex on a grander scale. My only issue with snapping Zod’s neck was that it was at least fifteen minutes too late, with far too many casualties caused by the delay. Get it done, Kal-El.Wait– CJ– does that mean you’re team Sucker Punch, because that’s a lonely place to reside? I mean, I liked Ultraviolet, and still hated Sucker Punch.

siskoid, good catch on the español! Lot of stamps in her passport, which sounds like a euphemism, but it’s not. New 52 Wally West only recently debuted, and if you think there’s some sordid stereotypes to go with the ethnic reassignment, right you are! As for Secret Wars… oh… we have some plans to discuss that. Might I ought to discuss discussing Secret Wars with you in the near future?

  7. Ha Ha, Yeah sucker punch had some good visuals. Now that movie is the perfect example of a movies visuals out doing the story. I don’t like everything I see, but hey, I have been watching movies since I was a kid. My parents had a VHS video store and lets just say there was way more bad movies then great movies. That trend continues today, so if I am entertained even by half, then it is good enough for me. Therefore although not in my top five MoS, and DKR gave me enough to hold me over till the next big dumb action movie from the comics world.
